I just saw a session at WordCamp Orange County on Elastic Search (http://www.elasticpress.io/ with https://github.com/10up/ElasticPress) that was able to scrape/sync SQL databases and provide incredibly fast google-like search as well as predictive search (10up had a separate Github respository for predictive search I think). This might be an interesting additional alternative with relatively low overhead.
