@Chronotope @palewire While I'm thinking about it there's lots of great stuff at https:/
Just learned about a tool for this at #DTMH2017 - github.com/oduwsdl/archiv…
But most publishers can likely implement this within their own systems in a more integrated way.
I was also thinking about how useful it would be for news orgs to also perform that process on every URL linked from the body of an article also.
Yeah. I bet it would be pretty easy to also build a WordPress plugin to handle that.
My dream is that a small suite of Wordpress tools could be build, refined and included in the base Wordpress VIP set of plugins -- thereby reaching many major publishers.
A simple ping to archiving services for a crawl each time a public save is made on a post would be big.
I could see that being pretty possible.
Getting buy-in and open-source contributors is always hard. Perhaps it would be a good proposal for a Knight grant?
Actually working on a project that transforms WordPress posts to an academic XML format and delivers them to a topic-specific document repository. github.com/PressForward/P…
Yes. I've seen that one. In classic open source style I independently created separate programs for each of those apis (rather than wrap them in one)
Yeah, reconsidering how we handle our content and archiving it is incredibly important. More so now than ever.
Yes. But we'd have to marshal some sustained development resources (which I've fail to muster in my nights and weekends) and get some orgs to work as testers.
Nothing with Wordpress is easy, but I agree. Wordpress could bulk export to neutral formats as well. It also could potentially move the whole thing to private LOCKSS style archives as a service.
I agree, especially with their focus on libraries. But I think institutional support from publishers, universities or the government could help more than anything.
Knight would provide a degree of legitimacy that makes it easier to deal with publishers, but partnering with a university or two def helps. Bunch of NYU folks here at news archiving conference ( @merbroussard ). Also @dpla, @chnm, @18F.
Been to a couple DTMHs and all those people are doing great work.
IMHO, publishers need to meet them in the middle and we're failing.
Outside institutions likely have to do the work for us, but they are oriented towards problems from their vantage post-publication.
It's still pretty rough and could use some love. I have a Django plugin as well. …ango-memento-framework.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
BTW, this is super cool and I was just thinking about how to implement something like it pastpages.github.io/wordpress-meme…

It's my passion project (i.e. money pit). IMHO, this kind of technology needs to be shipped into major CMS systems like Arc so that archiving isn't entirely about cleaning up other people's messes
