When I say Known, I mean Known-like. I know Marcus has discussed visions of an engine. It doesn't have to be Known.
It doesn't take much to slow a Wordpress plug-in down and if you do not cull often you can end up with conflicts.
I know all this and still love WordPress for the reasons you describe. It's why I am going to try it for two weeks and see if I like it.
I do know I am not using one of the two sanctioned themes but Hueman seems to work and when they break they get resolved quickly,
Yet Wordpress.com has it's own reader and from what folks say Jetpack doesn't play well with microformats2. So I wonder about long term bets. Yes I know Wordpress.org is separate from Automatic but I really don't know what Gutenberg will bring. May use it as time to try something new.
I do like the widget idea for your menu as I believe the widgets will fit into this new block page builder thing coming.
