I like the idea of explaining them better and may take a crack at doing so from a documentation standpoint.
If I recall the reason that prompted hiding it by default correctly, I'd be more worried that you're cutting out a much larger group of users who might not otherwise find the meta box if it were hidden by default than you'd be helping by hiding it.

@dangillmor This is one of the things I love about the indie web model. I'm much less likely to give frivolous attention to things when they're posted on my personal site. I take more pride in ownership.
Which sites are you syndicating to? I know it's the case that not all sites that SNAP supports are supported by Syndication Links. Most of the major ones like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr are, but some of the lesser ones like Flipboard, 500px aren't.
