@flancian @PkgBook Thanks for the reminder! I'd started writing up something on the history of the space (something that too many miss/forget) and been so distracted this week I'd nearly forgotten to finish and submit it.

Quick reminder that there's a Virtual Homebrew Website Club Meetup tonight. It's likely to have a very and slant given the current RSVPs.

@Chronotope @acarvin Yet another reminder in a seemingly long and unending list of reasons for why journalists (and everyone really) should have their own websites and tools.

@han_cee Thanks for the reminder to check on my own... Should be ready to eat in a day or two!

Last update turned off checkins in Post Kinds metabox · Issue #34 · dshanske/simple-location https://github.com/dshanske/simple-location/issues/34

It may have been something else, though I haven't changed anything else substantively recently...

When I updated simple locations with the new release, I think it disabled the visibility for checkins with Post Kinds Plugin. IIRC, there was a check that one did to see if the other was installed and enabled them. Perhaps changes in Post Kinds and Simple Location haven't kept abreast with each other as I believe the on/off in the Post Kinds plugin also moved a version or two back as well.

I want to say that I'd been manually changing the code for a while to show checkins within the metabox, though perhaps after the refactoring of Post Kinds a few months back, perhaps I hadn't and so it was updating Simple Location that turned it off yesterday. I can't be 100% sure, and the number of people using the two in tandem is surely small, so I thought I'd mention it.

In the meanwhile, (as a reminder to myself) I've manually hard coded checkins back on.

@jgmac1106 Thanks for the reminder; they were the first group on my list along with the crowd.

@EddieHinkle Clicking through will show that the text in the Twitter card is a quote of the original, in some part a reminder to me about what it was I had listened to. (It also serves as an advertisement for the thing itself--I like to promote good podcasts.) Most often these posts are just an emoji indicating the post type with the title and source of the thing I listened to. Occasionally I'll add some bit of a reply or commentary and bury the true post type into the Twitter Card along with a quote from the original. eg: https://twitter.com/ChrisAldrich/status/825206436305137664

Once in a rarer blue moon I'll throw a snippet of commentary into the Twitter card, but not often. See also https://indieweb.org/bookmark##How+to+POSSE for some thoughts on this. It's ever evolving. I'd love to hear your thoughts on improvement or alternate methods. I particularly like dumping additional data into the twitter cards when I can, though I'm aware that not all Twitter clients make use of them.

If you want to listen to what I'm listening to, you can subscribe to it via http://boffosocko.com/kind/listen/feed/. This feed format also works for other post types like "read", "like", "favorite", "photos", "checkins", "watches", etc.

Or by strange formatting did you mean some of the struck out text on links?

If that's the case, I'll note that I've got a parser on my site that checks for broken links (404s and others) that uses CSS to strike out links which have gone dead. And there were a number on that particular article. I have a master list of them compiled on my back end and usually once a month or so I go through to attempt to redirect them to new locations or to archive.org copies if available. In some sense it's a personal reminder to myself of how fragile the web can be.

Perhaps I could do a better/alternate visualization for broken links than striking out the text? Red links? Hover text? Other? Suggestions?

Replied to a post on github.com :

I've been following the conversation on https://github.com/pfefferle/wordpress-semantic-linkbacks/issues/71 which I think is closely related as it's primarily Facebook comments with emoji that seem to be causing the root problem.

I'll spend some time in the next two days to see if i can stumble across the "fix" snarfed did and close this out. Thanks for the reminder @pfefferle.

Malcolm, thanks for the reminder of those social RSS feeds. I'd seen them a few months back and meant to set up a reader specifically for consuming content from Twitter, Facebook, et al. I'll have to delve back into it in the new year as having a better reader is becoming more important/interesting to me.

@noaheverett A nice reminder of how far pictures in social media on mobile/web have come...
